This is a painting that captures the entire Kabuki stage and audience from the perspective of the seats. The audience members watching the actors on stage are depicted in detail.
It seems to have been very popular as entertainment, with the upper tiers of the second-floor seats completely filled with people. Scenes of people eating and drinking are depicted throughout, and it appears some foreigners are also drawn.
The paper itself is very thin, and perhaps due to age, the paper's color appears more brown than sepia.
I believe it is rare to find a Ukiyo-e print that depicts the entire stage. I think this offers a different kind of enjoyment from Ukiyo-e beauty prints.
Thank you for looking.
